The Main Event

We would be honored if you would be part of our happy day!

Please read the description of the below, because this will NOT be anything like a typical wedding.

Executive Summary:

  • Our happy event will be very, very short!
  • It will be broadcast live on the web!
  • It will be part of a live comedy marathon!

Full Description:

Our wedding will take place during a 50-hour live comedy marathon called Die Laughing. We have a 30 minute time slot, during which nearly anything can happen. We’re entrusting several of our comedian friends to improvise much of the ceremony. (We can tell you, though, that the bride and groom will be dressed for comfort, that there will be at least one sword, and that PowerPoint might be involved.)

Immediately after the ceremony, the next act onstage will be a live recording of the podcast Geeks Without God. We have been invited to be guests on the show, so if you like, you can stick around to hear us get interviewed, too.

After the recording, we have a few hours of free time, so we will be hanging out around the hotel with whomever has turned up.

Thus, in short: our wedding will be a comedy show, followed by a podcast, followed by free-form social time. There won’t be banquet food/dance/fancy clothes, but it will be unlike anything you have seen before!

April 9, 2016
Ceremony: 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM CDT
Podcast: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM CDT
Social Time: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM CDT
at Die Laughing

Why Die Laughing?
Expand

  • Because we met exactly 7 years ago on April 9th, and that is during Die Laughing weekend.
  • Because many of our friends will already be at Die Laughing that weekend.
  • Because many of our friends who can perform weddings help run Die Laughing.
  • Because Melissa has volunteered at and performed at every Die Laughing.
  • Because Die Laughing live-streams the entire 50 hour experience on the web, so our distant friends and family could still join us on our special day.
  • Because we suddenly had the opportunity to do something very unusual for our wedding, and we wanted to seize that opportunity.
  • Because laughter is one of the best things to share.
  • Because we’re weird.

Why Geeks Without God?
Expand

  • Because all three hosts of Geeks Without God will be helping with our wedding, and they asked nicely.
  • Because we both have a long history of podcasting, so having a podcast be one of the first things we do as a married couple is fitting.
  • Because Fes has never answered The Five Questions.
  • Because we’re weird.

Will this event be child-friendly?
Expand

Many of the comedians who work with Die Laughing are known for going “blue”, so that’s a fair question! We have requested a PG-13 rating from our collaborators. Younger kids probably would be baffled by what we’re doing, anyway.

What in the heck should I wear?
Expand

The majority of the audience will be in t-shirt/jeans level attire. Dress for comfort! Or in whatever you feel like!

Are you registered anywhere?
Expand

No. Please, NO GIFTS. Seriously. We already own more stuff than we need.

Instead, please consider donating a couple bucks to Die Laughing. They are paying for the hotel space and giving us a spot in their festivities for free.

(We have a longer answer to this question here.)

They’re taking money at the door! Do I need to pay to get in?
Expand

Nope! Die Laughing is free to attend.

That said… Die Laughing is a fundraiser for Fearless Comedy Productions, which is why there are people at the door taking money. If you do attend in person, please consider giving them a few dollars, since they are paying for the hotel space, and they are giving us a spot in their festivities for free.

That’s a long way for me to travel for a 30-minute event!
Expand

No problem! While we’d love to see you in person, we know many of our friends live far away, have prohibitive schedules, or have problems traveling. This is another reason we’re collaborating with Die Laughing: this whole thing will be streamed live on the web. If you want to witness the event from the comfort of your own living room, you can! The Die Laughing web site will have more information on the live video during the weekend.

I’m sad there’s no reception! How am I going to show off my dance moves to long-lost cousins?
Expand

Don’t worry! Later in the spring/summer, we will be orchestrating a couple casual events to get family and friends together. There will be food and music and social time. We will let everyone know once the planning comes together.

What happens if I want to stick around later at the comedy marathon?
Expand

After the podcast recording, we will be free to hang out with people at the hotel until about 8 PM… which is when Melissa goes onstage to run one of her improv shows, Judging a Book by Its Cover. She will also be running PowerPoint Karaoke at 10 PM.

Die Laughing runs nonstop around the clock, from 7 PM Friday, April 8, through 9 PM Sunday, April 10. You can see the full schedule here.  The shows can run anywhere from child-friendly to extremely offensive, but the schedule will show you what the “rating” of the show will be.

Will there be cake?
Expand

It depends on what happens with the sword.

    Congratulations Melissa&Fes!
I just loved this concept, simple and original! No fancy-glittery stuff!
Stay there together forever and enjoy as you usually do!

    Best wishes from INDIA 🙂
